Matsushita Invests in 2nd Chip Plant for Suzhou Matsushita Semiconductor
July 22, 2005
Matsushita has plans to invest another US$88.7 million into Suzhou Matsushita Semiconductor, for a second chip-making plant 170,000 square meters large. The plant, slated to begin production in April 2006, will be dedicated to manufacturing key components for discrete semiconductor devices, camera modules for mobile handsets, as well as ICs. The subsidiary currently has a workforce of 1,500, but the new facility is expected to boost the number to 4,300. The addition of the new plant is hopeful of increasing the maker's semiconductor output to two billion units in 2005 and seven billion units in 2007, as well as pushing the production of cell phone camera modules to 50 million in 2007. Suzhou Matsushita Semiconductor was set up in December of 2001 in the New District area in Suzhou China, for the semiconductor packaging and testing business.
